At this point, I’m convinced Chris Stapleton could sing literally anything and it would be masterpiece.
Lucky for us, Chris is as good a songwriter as he is a performer, but with a voice like that, Chris could sing a song written by a 9 year-old and it would still probably go No. 1.
Back before he was the household name he is today, Chris was a prominent Nashville songwriter, pinning hits for Darius Rucker, Josh Turner, Kenny Chesney, Thomas Rhett and more. One of the many songs he wrote that got overlooked, however, is a track called “Treat You Right,” recorded by a band you’ve probably never heard of, Sixtyfourwest.
It was co-written with hit-maker, Gary Harrison, who is responsible for “I Hate Everything” by George Strait, and many, many more classic country songs, and was never actually recorded by Chris himself.
While the 45 year-old singer clearly has no problem saving songs for the right moment (as his last record finally featured “It Takes A Woman,” a song he wrote over ten years ago now), I imagine there’s a good chance we’ll never actually hear Chris record this. But hey, at least we have it in the vault to go back to from time to time.
The track was released by Sixtyfourwest in 2011 but here’s a performance of Chris singing it in 2006. You’re welcome.
