Two names to keep an eye on.
On Friday, up and coming artists, Dylan Marlowe and Avery Anna, released a new duet titled I Will (When You Do).
The pair have been teasing the single on their respective socials since last month, and this week showed off several photos to promote the song from what is presumably Dylan’s kick ass Jeep. The two also released a music video featuring themselves (and the jeep) to go along with the single.
The song utilizes the duet format well to tell the story of two former lovers who can’t seem to let each other go, even after their time together has run its course. The two have a natural chemistry, but before you ask, Dylan is married, so don’t go getting any ideas about seeing these two together outside of their music. Even so, The pair’s voices play well off each other, and they do a good job of selling their roles as two people stuck on each other. Neither person is strong enough to move on, and that keeps them stuck in a cycle of hurting each other. The chorus puts it best with its finishing line:
If you wanna know when I’m gonna go and get over you, well, I will when you do.
I Will (When You Do) has the underpinnings of a piano ballad, but the chorus kicks in heavy to drive home the painful subject matter of the lyrics. Dylan signed with Sony Records at the beginning of this year, and it feels like the production quality on his records has ticked up since he did. Avery is no stranger to songs about breakup and heartache, but this is the first duet we’ve seen from her, and with that comes a unique dynamic of seeing her play off another artist.
I genuinely love the pairing for this duet. These two have been on a remarkably similar path in their careers to this point, with both seeing their popularity explode through TikTok covers and parlaying that into record deals. Both released debut EP’s in the last twelve months and have seen their star grow consistently since. They both have great crossover appeal and do a good job of finding the balance between their country roots and the mainstream sound that lands you on country radio these days. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see this one get big on TikTok.
Both artists are actively touring, with Avery playing ten headlining shows before the end of the year and Dylan spending the last month opening for Jordan Davis. Additionally, Dylan will be opening for Morgan Wallen in Atlanta’s Truist Park in November.
