“But I know the present will not last, tomorrow will be kinder.“
Kaitlin Butts, frequent Flatland Cavalry collaborator and wife of their frontman, Cleto Cordero, is back with a brand new cover of the Secret Sisters’ Tomorrow Will Be Kinder.
Butts took to Instagram on Dec. 20 to announce the song’s release.
The track was first released by the Secret Sisters in 2012 for the first The Hunger Games film soundtrack. It wouldn’t be surprising if Butts decided to cover this song given that Flatland Cavalry recently appeared on the soundtrack for the most recent film in the franchise, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes with their original song, Wool.
In an Instagram post announcing the song was available, Butts expressed how the song has gotten her through some extremely hard times throughout her life:
“The songs from What Else Can She Do are from a time in my life where I felt really hopeless. During that time, I turned to a Secret Sisters song when I really needed some comfort and peace.
I would lay in bed flat on my back and turn on this song when I felt like I couldn’t take it anymore. I would let the tears roll down my cheeks and into my ears and after listening a few times through, I would start to believe that tomorrow would, in fact, be kinder.”
Accompanied by nothing more than Butts on acoustic guitar and Kurt Ozan on dobro, the cover provides a new, twangy version of Secret Sisters’ original song. Butts and Ozan change the tempo in an extremely subtle way that makes the song feel more like a somber waltz compared to the original, and it works beautifully.
