Since its release back in June, “High Road” has been one of Koe Wetzel and Jessie Murph’s most successful songs to date. Debuting at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100, #3 on Spotify US and #10 on Apple Music, the track became the highest-charting song for the duo just ten days after its release.
Its chart success coupled with its massive streaming numbers (60 million streams on Spotify alone) made it a no-brainer to take to the late-night circuit, and that’s exactly what Wetzel and Murph did, performing it last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Last Saturday, the “Ragweed” singer took to Instagram to announce the pair would be performing “High Road” on The Late Show.
Despite the success of “High Road,” it did not come without controversy. Many fans were extremely critical of Jessie Murph’s inclusion in the song, saying that she ruined it. While it seems fairly ridiculous given that the pair’s voices work well together in my opinion, it didn’t stop the seemingly endless amount of comments complaining about her being on the track.
Fan criticism coupled with the fact that Wetzel released a solo version of the song on July 12 has given “High Road” a bit of needless controversy. In fact, Murph was so frustrated with Wetzel’s fans that she posted a TikTok with the header reading, “Me when I realized I don’t have to deal with Koe Wetzel fans calling me a rat for being on a song anymore,” after the solo version was released.
It seems like her frustration was clearly directed at his fans, not Wetzel himself, and it shows with the pair reuniting and delivering the performance last night on Colbert.
