That chorus still makes me emotional.
On January 9th, 2012, Miranda Lambert released one of her biggest hits to date, “Over You.”
Miranda co-wrote the track with her husband at the time, Blake Shelton. It was released as the second single off her fourth studio album, “Four The Record,” and went on to win Song of the Year at the 2012 CMA Awards, as well as at the 2013 ACM Awards.
The song was inspired by Blake losing his older brother in a car accident when he was a teenager. Miranda said she ended up recording it because the song was too emotional for Blake:
“Blake said he couldn’t record it for himself or sing it onstage every night, but he would be honored for me to.”
Miranda gave one of the most subtle, yet emotional vocal performances of her career on this track, and although, in my opinion, the melody (as well as some of the lyrics) on the verses are juvenile, if the chorus doesn’t move you, I don’t know what will.
Miranda and Blake divorced in 2015 after four years of marriage: “We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.”
During their time spent together, you could argue that both artists were at the peak of their careers, seeing hit after hit on country radio and Blake becoming a judge on the popular NBC singing competition, The Voice.
Miranda later admitted that she doesn’t regret writing and recording the now certified 2x platinum hit:
“It was really a special moment and I’m so glad we shared that song and that it helped his family heal.”
