Keep an eye out for this one.
On Friday, Tanner Usrey announced his debut album Crossing Lines will be released November 17th. Usrey also released the title track from the album, as well as the track list.
Usrey is not afraid to delve into subject matter that other artists might not want to touch, and that is on full display here. The title track is an upbeat, guitar driven song with dark lyrics that create an interesting clash in tone. The lyrics explore the pressures of life and coping with failure, and how he is so used to doing so that he is “pretty good at faking sober.”
There are very few artists in country music today who have the ability to bend genres and styles quite like Tanner. It’s hard to put a label on the type of country he is making because it varies so much. He’ll switch from a stripped down, soulful cut like “Beautiful Lies” to a more classical country sound in “Take Me Home” to full blown country rock on “Medicine Man.”
Tanner’s sound could be described as “straight shooting storytelling with country grit, rock ‘n’ roll energy, and Americana eloquence.“
If you’re not familiar with Tanner, you may want to get to know him quick. Usrey originally caught listeners’ attention with his 2019 EP Medicine Man, which featured his most streamed songs “Come Back Down” and “Beautiful Lies.” In April he signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and released his debut single “Give It Some Time.” His song “The Light” was featured on the season 4 finale of the ever popular Yellowstone, which is all but a seal of approval within country music these days.
The track list features 15 songs, including several favorites that have already been released. Several notable inclusions include “Take Me Home,” “Destiny,” and a new version of “Beautiful Lies” featuring Ella Langley.
