Just three months ahead of the release for his eighth studio album, “Leather,” Cody Johnson released the lead single, “The Painter,” back in August of last year, a heartfelt tribute to his wife, Brandi, of almost 15 years.
Although the song was written by Benjy Davis, Kat Higgins and Ryan Larkins, and not actually by CoJo himself, he explained why the song meant so much to him and his marriage upon announcing the songs release:
“My favorite lyric in ‘The Painter’ is ‘for every wall I built, she saw a canvas.’ If there’s anything that describes my marriage with my wife, Brandi, it’s that line. “And that’s why we’ve been together for 15 years.”
Fast forward to November 8th, just a week after the album dropped, and Cody gave one of the most memorable performances of the night at the 58th annual CMA Awards.
Sporting jeans, a suit jacket and a white cowboy hat, the 36 year-old singer delivered a romantic performance of the song with a beautiful backdrop that featured a black and white portrait of his wife, Brandi, and gradually filled with color as the performance progressed, bringing the song to life so to speak.
And as of this morning, Cody released the official music video for The Painter and it didn’t disappoint.
The video kicks off with a man and woman (inherently depicting CoJo and his wife) meeting for the first time and the man asking her to dance. Before the first verse kicks in, the man asks her to marry him while out on the dance floor…she chuckles and says “you’re crazy.” The rest is history…
The storyline, the acting, the performance shot of CoJo in the woods, the clip of him and his wife dancing….all 10/10.
