Hell of a performance.
Back on August 17, Tyler Childers delivered a knockout 22-song setlist at Folsom Field in Boulder Colorado. The set was stacked top to bottom with killer performances of hits such as “Lady May,” “All Your’n” and “In Your Love” along with fan-favorites, “Follow You to Virgie,” “Shake the Frost” and “Universal Sound.” However, the most electric performance of the night was none other than the title track of Childers’ 2023 album, Rustin’ In The Rain.
Though many have said that Childers’ newest releases aren’t quite as good as his earlier work, there’s no denying the pure magic of “Rustin’ In The Rain.” It’s a romping track that would sound absolutely perfect in a bustling saloon, whipping past in a breezy nature that any good bluegrass track should while simultaneously providing some extremely fun wordplay throughout. I mean seriously, who else other than Tyler Childers would sing:
“I have gee’d and haw’d
Myself into a tizzy
I am yearning for the turning
In the most peculiar way”
The entire song is so uniquely Childers and unabashedly Appalachian that one can’t help but smile while listening to this fun track. In typical fashion, he finds a unique way to say a familiar phrase. Any writer can say, “I hope you don’t forget about me.” Childers, like any writer of his stature, takes a unique approach and likens the thought of losing his love to his heart “rusting in the rain.”
In case you missed the show in Boulder, Childers and Co. just uploaded an absolutely phenomenal live performance of the track to his YouTube channel, directed by Vincent Adam Paul. There’s no denying that the song is an absolute heater in the studio, but it’s arguably even better live. Every member of the band gets their time to shine throughout this romper of a song with their energy being simply unmatched.
