To put it plainly, six-time CMA Award winner and three-time Grammy nominee Luke Combs is just a down-to-earth guy at the heart of it all.
If two things stay consistent whether he’s at home or on a stage in front of thousands of fans, he dresses pretty low-key with his classic button-down and jeans (minus maybe a high-end watch), and he’s a proud Appalachian State University fan. However, apparently repping his college pride with his atypical laid-back attire wasn’t necessarily up to par for his Wednesday morning putt yesterday at the Old Course.
After wrapping up two back-to-back massive shows at Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh over the weekend, the country hit maker took some time off yesterday, July 29, at the world’s oldest and most iconic golf course in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland. Considered the “home of golf” as the stomping grounds for some of the earliest golf games back in the 15th century, it’s a pretty high honor to play on the links.
Combs’ visit to the green is now going viral on Twitter/X after many users have been noticing his gym-teacher-esque outfit with a Mountaineers football Nike sweatshirt, sports fit cargo shorts, and an old head golfing hat. One tweet asked, “Luke Combs at the Old Course… What do you notice?” and it was only a matter of time before heated golf fans took a swing at his clothing choices.
Now I totally get the status quo dress code standards of golf and that at most courses it’s customary to wear the collared polo and tailored pants. However, to Combs’ defense, many fans also pointed out that he very well could be wearing a collared shirt underneath his hoodie. Not to mention the fact that it was probably a little nippier than he had anticipated, with the weather currently hitting a high of 64 degrees F and a low of 49 degrees.
Either way, Combs seemed unbothered by the upset masses calling him out, responding to one fan who took note of his “Avocados from Mexico” hoodie from the 2023 Appalachian State Cure Bowl in Orlando. The “Hurricane” singer simply responded, “Golf is a hobby. Ball is life.”
So there you have it, folks: when it comes down to his loyalties, Combs won’t ever stop repping his North Carolina pride even at a prestigious golf course. Insanely enough, his 2026 My Kinda Saturday Night Tour will finally wrap up this weekend as he heads to London tomorrow night, July 31, for a string of three final shows at Wembley Stadium.
