Now that Ella Langley has officially graced us with all 18 tracks from her latest release, Dandelion, this album is without a doubt a declaration of Langley’s fierce artistry. Mixing traditional country elements with whimsical instrumentals and infectious funky earworms, the sophomore project stabilizes Langley in her reigning position as a staple in the modern genre.
In Langley’s words, “hungover is what brought people to the table, and Dandelion is what makes them sit down and eat.” Making waves as the leading lady of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her hit “Choosin’ Texas,” garnering five weeks at the number one spot, she notes that this project is not only a deeply personal statement of her current sound at 26-years-old but also an indicator of the legacy she wants to leave. “It reflects on what made me this way while giving a glimpse of what’s next. It’s my favorite project I’ve ever done, it’s the most ‘me’ I’ve ever put out.”
While the album is undeniably well-rounded and arguably has no skips, after our initial listens, the Country Chord staff has put together our rankings from “worst” (if we can even call any of these songs that) to “best.” These picks are based on the varying factors of fan-appeal, overall production, and, of course, a little bit of personal bias. The 23-second-long intro and 51-second-long outro, “Froggy Went A Courtin’,” was not factored into this list.
With that being said, while many pronounced favorites may sit at the bottom of the list, this by no means indicates they are bad songs. Controversially, number 16 may cause some eyebrow raises (including myself, who will undeniably have this song on repeat this weekend) and the Kitty Wells’ track, which, of course, can never be dissed considering its acclaimed history. But, unfortunately, some songs had to hold the final few spots.
