Cody Johnson, the king of covers, has returned with another doozy.
Currently enjoying a short two-week break before returning to the stage on August 7 in Oklahoma City on his Live ’26 tour, the ACM Entertainer of the Year shared yet another absolutely stunning cover to his social media today, and it’s only a matter of time before the comments flood with people asking for it to be recorded. Johnson’s no stranger to the track in question, Don Williams’ 1982 hit, “If Hollywood Don’t Need You (Honey I Still I Do).”
Just a couple of years back, he performed it on the Opry stage, and the song has been a frequent go-to at his shows during the 2018 time period. For fans of his iconic cover of Reba’s “Whoever’s In New England,” which was released on streaming back in November 2020, this rendition is pretty reminiscent of that style.
Today, Johnson’s vocals shone on this stripped-down rendition with his acoustic guitar in hand, surrounded by what appears to be two fellow guitar players and a mesmerizing violin accompanying in the background. There’s no denying the Texas native’s voice just lends itself so well to a classic country sad song, and this clip is no exception.
Fingers crossed we may be in luck for a potential recording or at least the full video to be released at some point because, given Johnson’s green “The Covey” t-shirt, this clip was filmed the same day as his Amazon Music “Queue Up” session, which he posted last week. Who knows, maybe this could be another Amazon Music exclusive?
But, for now, as Johnson points out in his behind-the-scenes bus sit-down, his most recent June 26 album, The Banks of the Trinity, has plenty of tracks to revisit and fall in love with for every mood you could possibly be in.
