There’s no denying that being an artist in the spotlight comes with constant scrutiny. The job title requires being either on stage or active on social media 24/7, leading to a nonstop, relentless level of criticism.
This reality is something Priscilla Block knows all too well, and it’s the basis for her new song, “Couldn’t Care Less.” Earlier today, May 21, Block shared a preview of the track on TikTok, opening up about the struggles she faces as an artist. Though rooted in her personal experiences, the song explores themes that are universally relatable.
The song centers around her typically tough exterior, in which she displays an “I couldn’t care less” attitude. The lyrics reveal a deeper truth of struggling to keep up this facade when facing both external criticism and self-inflicted doubt. These feelings are something that any listener who’s ever battled with insecurities will recognize.
“I Couldn’t Care Less” showcases Block’s extremely vulnerable personal recounts throughout her career, with some deep cut lyrics such as:
“I posted a picture and it got a bunch of likes, that ‘she should lose weight’ comment kept me up all night. I hit reply and made a little light of what they said, like I couldn’t care less.”
“Walked the carpet sat a couple rows up from the stage, hoping I would hear mine, then they said a different name, I was clapping, laughing, smiling, standing in a sparkly dress, like I couldn’t care less.”
The chorus then goes on to sing about the real truth of trying so hard to be an “I don’t care” person. No matter how many times you say it, you’ll always care a little bit– or in Priscilla’s case, “couldn’t care more”:
“Ooh, like it don’t mean something, ooh like to me it’s nothing like I do my best to tune it out to shut the down like I couldn’t care less, hell I couldn’t care more”
Now, if those lyrics don’t stir something in you, please share your secrets, because Block nails the emotional toll of constantly battling with struggles of self-worth. Within just the first minute of the song, she taps into two relatable concepts of body image and feelings of failure in her career.
For those unfamiliar with Priscilla Block, the 29-year-old country singer from North Carolina has been making music since 2017, but her debut album, Welcome to the Block Party, dropped in 2022. Recently, she’s been candid about her health journey, including her experience with the 75 Hard Challenge. Scrolling through her posts, you can see the radiating energy this new era of her life has spurred.
Still, Block recognizes the harsh reality that fans can be cruel and people always think they have a right to comment on others’ bodies. It’s incredibly refreshing to see a female artist speak out about this aspect of their lives in a song. Especially in a culture where everything is centered around ‘body-positivity’, Block reaffirms that it is normal to be hurt by discouraging comments from trolls online.
She also touches on something that may be a bit taboo for other artists: the sting of award show disappointment. While I’m sure plenty of musicians would be quick to publicly claim “the awards don’t matter,” Block disproves this flimsy statement. There is a level of disappointment that comes with losing out on anything, and the fact that Block had the courage to sing about this part of her career makes her all the more relatable in my eyes.
Fans echoed their respect for the song’s message in the comments of the TikTok:
“I did not give you permission to read my diary like that😭”
“yessss, this is 100% the one! So many women including myself will relate 💓”
“I need this, please I relate to this in more ways than one”
Currently, there’s no official release date for this emotional track, but you better believe I’ll be on the lookout for the full version (tissues in hand, of course, for when it drops). And kudos to Priscilla Block for showing that even your favorite country music artists aren’t made of steel.
