Returning to the stage 20 years later, American Idol’s season 3 sweetheart Kellie Pickler joined forces last night with none other than the competition’s current fan favorite, Hannah Harper.
As the show heads into its final three-showdown, yesterday’s Monday night airing of its Class of 2006 Reunion episode highlighted some of the show’s beginning stars like Elliott Yamin, Bucky Covington, Paris Bennett, and Taylor Hicks, joining up with the current contestants. However, there could not have been a better pairing than these two pure country ladies who share a likeness in their charming personalities and authentic vocals.
Despite the fact that Pickler placed sixth in the competition at the time, her career grew larger than the TV screen, rising to the top of the country charts with hits like “Best Days of Your Life,” “Red High Heels,” and “I Wonder.” Last night also marked a special return for the North Carolina native, who has since stepped away from her musical career following the passing of her husband 3 years ago in February 2023.
With many fans excited to see the singer-songwriter return to her roots after the emotionally heavy past few years, the performance certainly delivered. The two women paid tribute to a ‘90s female country icon with a rendition of Martina McBride’s “A Broken Wing.” Glistening on the stage with matching sequin dresses, their harmonizing notes secured Harper a spot in next week’s Grand Finale episode.
Aiming for the season 24 crown, she’ll join the stage alongside fellow frontrunners Keyla Richardson and Jordan McCullough, but if social media is any indication of the mother of three’s shot at winning, she’s a fairly clear top choice. Many in the comment section of Pickler and Harper’s duet echoed their admiration, with fans already calling her the “next American Idol” and recognizing last night as her best performance yet.
Next week is sure to be a nail-biter for the Missouri native’s fan base, as supporters continue to rally behind her throughout her Idol journey ahead of her return next week at 8/7c on ABC.
