“I don’t belong to anyone, nobody belongs to me.”
John Mayer has flirted with country for years, appearing on CMT Crossroads episodes with Brad Paisley and Keith Urban. Between his criminally underrated songwriting ability and his legendary guitar work, it’s not hard to see how he’s influenced today’s country stars.
Today, Parker McCollum is the latest artist to cover one of Mayer’s songs, the underrated 2009 deep cut, Perfectly Lonely.
McCollum has stated in the past that Mayer has been a huge influence on his style in the past on Twitter before, noting that every song of his has been influenced by the Slow Dancing in a Burning Room singer.
The song has actually been available as an Amazon Music original for almost two years now, being released on April 15, 2022. Today, McCollum released it on all platforms.
As a massive John Mayer fan, it is incredibly cool to see McCollum cover a relatively unknown deep cut from him. The song was never released as a single from Mayer’s 2009 album, Battle Studies, and has remained one of his most underrated deep cuts to this day.
Mayers’ legendary guitar tone is captured extremely well throughout. The added touch of steel guitar in the latter half of the track adds the perfect amount of country flair to the song while still staying true to the original.
