I think we just unlocked some of the best parenting advice, and surprisingly…it came from Brantley Gilbert.
The once rowdy Georgia Boy who was raisin’ h*ll and shoutin’ “Bottoms Up” is now a father of three and preparing for the upcoming release of his eighth studio album, Sins of the Father. Ahead of the project’s July 24 release, Gilbert stopped into the God’s Country podcast to reflect on stories from his 15-year-long career and give a glimpse of what’s to come.
The ‘Brothers Hunt’ hosts got to talking with Gilbert about being a Dad and the difficulties of raising his kids, especially his 8-year-old son, who he notes has started to “talk back a little bit” to Gilbert’s wife. He then shared the parenting approach he uses to correct the behavior, explaining that he wants his son to understand that his mother is more than just “Mom” and that it’s important to respect her.
He explains he looked at his son and sternly said, “Hey dude, that may be your mama, but that’s my wife.” Emphasizing, “No other man on this planet is going to speak to her like that. If they did, I’d knock them out cold. I can’t let you either.”
While it may seem a bit harsh to some to say to an eight-year-old boy that in any other circumstance you would’ve beat them up, I have to applaud Gilbert because this is exactly the way husbands should be standing up for their wives. He then takes accountability for the situation, noting, “You know who he looks up to more than anybody in his life is me. At some point, he’s seen me raise my voice at her.”
Admitting he too is not perfect, he summarizes it as, “If we wanna see changes in our kids, we have to be the change and we have to live in that direction, and that’s so freaking hard.”
Gilbert mainly just hopes that his past mistakes don’t come back to “bite him in the a**” through his kids, which is why he’s now aiming to change the pattern and raise them right. He explains that this idea was the main force behind the album’s title track, reciting the prayer, “I’ve done my dirt and been washed in the water. I go to church, I ain’t living the gospel but tonight Lord I pray for our sons and daughters. Don’t make them pay for the sins of the father.”
Gilbert’s 15-track project will drop tonight along with a clean version that he shares is, “me owning all of it – the mistakes, the lessons and who I am now. It’s all part of the same story, and each track stands on its own, representing its own chapter.” The “Country Must Be Country Wide” singer will also return to the road next Tuesday, July 28, in York, PA, as he continues on the extension of his 2026 Real American Tour.
