Doin’ Whitley justice…
It’s no secret (or at least it shouldn’t be anyway), that Zach Top is emerging himself as one of the biggest country artists in the genre. While Morgan Wallen and Zach Bryan overwhelmingly dominate streaming numbers, Top is bringing back that traditional 80’s and 90’s sound country music fans clearly still crave, and doing it extremely well I might add.
While his original music, especially the songs from his recent sophomore studio album, “Cold Beer & Country Music,” are nothing short of incredible, the man does every artist before him justice when he adds his smooth and twangy vocals into the mix. From his acoustic covers of George Strait’s “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” and “Nobody In His Right Mind Would’ve Left Her” (you can watch that here), to his live performances of Billy Currington’s 2006 hit, “Good Directions.”
And just recently, Top performed at The Bell Auditorium for the 25th anniversary celebration of Kicks99’s Guitar Pull, where he covered “Between an Old Memory and Me” by the legendary, Keith Whitley.
“Between an Old Memory and Me” was written by Keith Stegall and Charlie Craig, and while it was later made famous by Travis Tritt, Whitley first released his version on his 1989 album, “I Wonder Do You Think of Me.”
I know this is a pipe dream, but a Keith Whitley tribute album from Zach Top would break the internet (and my speakers). Who knows, maybe I’ll start an online petition – I mean, crazier things have happened, amirite?
