One of the best performances of the year.
Headlining Laurel Cove Music Festival in Pineville, Kentucky back on June 7, Wyatt Flores delivered a 16-song setlist that included fan-favorites, “Please Don’t Go,” “Losing Sleep” and “Milwaukee” along with an encore performance of Tyler Childers’ “Shake the Frost.” However, the highlight of the show was none other than Flores’ joint performance with Nicholas Jamerson on his signature hit, “Linda James.”
After performing “Losing Sleep” late into the set, Flores called Jamerson out to perform the song with him. What followed was one of the best performances we’ve seen throughout this busy festival season.
As mentioned, “Linda James” has become Jamerson’s signature song, boasting nearly six million streams on Spotify alone and is arguably one of the best songs of the 2020s so far. Written by Jamerson and his brother, William, the track is a tribute to a dear friend of the two. In a Facebook post, he wrote a lengthy tribute to Linda James, saying:
“What I realized through Linda’s passing was that God is still in the church, but God is also outside of the church. You can experience God through anything that you see God in. You don’t have to limit your experience of God to a particular place or time to experience. That’s what I mean in the chorus when it says ‘Take care of the people and you won’t need a steeple to give the world your light.’ You experience Eternal Love and Grace whenever and wherever you acknowledge it.”
There’s no doubt that Flores is one of the brightest stars in the indie/alt country scene, and it’s clear that he has a deep love for all of the artists that paved the way for this independent renaissance that we are currently experiencing. From his performance of Turnpike Troubadours’ “Kansas City Southern” before his Red Rocks show to the aforementioned cover of “Shake the Frost” to his appearance with Sam Barber covering “Jersey Giant,” the “Wish I Could Stay” singer has shown he can cover some of the greats with ease.
