On the off chance someone reading this personally knows Tracy Lawrence, please show him this video ASAP because I have a feeling he’d thoroughly enjoy it.
For those who’ve never seen the 90’s country music staple’s podcast, TL’s Road House, there’s not one episode I’ve seen where the two-time Grammy nominee doesn’t bring up Zach Top. And rightfully so, because if there’s one artist who’s been able to make it big by reviving the legendary country sound of Lawrence’s era, it would be Top.
On each hour-ish-long episode, TL invites various country music stars and songwriters onto the show and never fails to ask his fellow veterans (and sometimes the new guys) who they most admire in the industry currently.
And well, as you can guess for Tracy, the one name he always brings up is Washington native Zach Top.
Just a few weeks ago, the “I Never Lie” singer was brought up on Justin Moore’s episode, to which TL noted, “how good it is to see fiddle and steel back on the radio a little more prominently cause he’s cutting good traditional stuff,” and again on Jon Pardi’s episode when the two raved about Top’s ability to smoke a cig while playing the guitar and singing. Of course, Lawrence also heavily extended his admiration for Top’s sound when he actually appeared on the show back in March 2024.
Well, way before Top would even be on Lawrence’s radar, let alone sitting on his couch, a young, bare-faced, aspiring version of the now country star serenaded his growing crowd of fans online with a cover of one of Tracy’s staples. Back in March 2021, 23-year-old Top posted his rendition of the 1997 hit, “How A Cowgirl Says Goodbye.”
Looking back on these resurfaced gems, it’ll never fail to amaze me that the surefire talent was just sitting right underneath our noses for all those years. Hitting the guitar licks flawlessly and singing with the same addictive, beautiful tune, the original videos have since garnered over 2M views on Facebook alone.
It’s not hard to see why Lawrence also now fanboys over Top and his nostalgic revival of the country sound that dominated radio in the ’80s and ’90s.
And to be fair, his budding skills didn’t go completely unnoticed back in the day. Even “Dreaming With My Eyes Open” singer Clay Walker applauded Top in 2021 under the original TikTok post, saying, “Sounds great!”
In the caption, Top shared, “This is one of my all-time favorites.” Is it too greedy to jump the gun and request that Top and Lawrence revive the track from his fifth studio album in an official duet?
While we’re on the subject of potential crossover songs from Tracy Lawrence and Zach Top, the 28-year-old has covered “Paint Me A Birmingham” quite a few times on tour this year, which is another must-hear performance to check out below. With his 2026 Cold Beer & Country Music wrapping up at the end of October, luckily, new music from the fan-favorite is still on the way, with promises of a full album dropping in Spring 2027.
