Oh, what I’d give to have Chris Stapleton revisit his SteelDriver days just once at a show.
The 12-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter fronted the bluegrass band back in 2007-2010, during which they produced their iconic self-titled debut album. And Lord, I’d pay a lot of good money to hear his voice revived live on some of the album’s staple tracks like “Midnight Train to Memphis,” “If It Hadn’t Been For Love,” and the beloved “Heaven Sent.”
Luckily for fans at Stapleton’s sold-out Fenway Park show this past Saturday, August 15 (and unluckily for me, who wasn’t there to witness it), Stapleton performed the absolutely legendary pull that is the band’s 2008 track, “Heaven Sent” per a fan request. Yielding nearly 70 million streams on Spotify, Stapleton rarely performs his ex-group’s song anymore, so the Boston crowd was in for quite a treat.
Stripping the track back with just his acoustic guitar, the song pick was apparently spurred thanks to a fan’s request in the crowd as he announced beforehand, “let’s try it out.” I fear the crowd was not appreciating this performance enough, considering I can hear wayyy too much murmuring over top of this beautiful rendition.
Unfortunately, Stapleton only has a few more dates left on his 2026 All American Road Show, so Lord only knows what kind of surprise performances he’ll have up his sleeve for the remaining stops, whether it be a heavy rock cover or a bluegrass throwback. With that being said, he’ll return to the stage tonight, August 18, at Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater in Virginia Beach.
