Pre-”Tennessee Orange” stardom and headlining sold-out tours, Megan Moroney dabbled in a few side hustles. One of which was acting as an extra for Luke Combs’ “Beer Never Broke My Heart” music video.
During a VIP preshow at her recent concert at the Amory in Minneapolis on May 15, the Georgia girl answered a few burning fan questions. One of those being “What’s a surprising fact about you that fans might not know?”. Moroney unapologetically first answered with the response, “Well, I can’t cook.” Which, kudos to her for the raw honesty there.
She followed up by telling the crowd, “I was in the ‘Beer Never Broken My Heart’ music video,” which might not be a shock to diehard emo cowgirl fans. However, for those who are also new to learning this fact, the story goes that back in her college days in 2019, Moroney and her best friend, Natalie, drove to Nashville to be unpaid extras in Combs’ video.
“If you literally look at the Spotify canvas, I even made it into the 8 seconds. I was supposed to be the drunk girl at the bar, so I was holding up a fake beer.”
Sure enough, around the 2:20 mark of the video, you can spot Moroney confidently walking into frame. She pops up a few more times as the dive bar scene gets rowdier, dancing along with the crowd.
During this period, Moroney was hustling as an Instagram influencer while developing her music career. Her debut single, “Wonder,” wouldn’t be released until 3 years later in 2021, which, despite not being her most popular song, has since amassed over 63 million Spotify streams.
Looking back, it’s wild to think Moroney once drove 300+ miles just to be an extra. Now, she’s headlining festivals and sharing chart space with the very artists she once played background roles for.
In a full-circle moment, during the same VIP session, she performed her song from the 2024 Twisters’ soundtrack, “Never Left Me.” The track has become one of the standout hits from the album, right alongside Combs’ viral anthem “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma.” Moroney noted she’s only performed the song live a handful of times, making it a special treat for the Minneapolis crowd.
