Ty Myers is undoubtedly one of the hottest up-and-comers in country music today. At only 18 years old, the Texas native has made waves in the genre with his smash hit, “The Ends of the Earth,” which recently netted him his first-ever entry on the Billboard Hot 100.
As Myers gears up for the release of his highly-anticipated 16-song debut album, The Select, he appeared on Apple Music’s Country Risers Radio podcast with Ward Guenther to discuss the record, his influences and more.
In the interview, Myers was asked about the comparisons he gets to both Parker McCollum and John Mayer. Myers focused in on Mayer, noting that the “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room” singer is the biggest influence on his music, “He’s my number one biggest hero ever. I love the fact that he’s changed so drastically throughout his career. He did what he wanted to do, and that’s what I gravitate towards. He did what he wanted and made the world bend to what he wanted to do.”
If you’re even a bit familiar with Mayer, you’ll know that Myers is absolutely correct in his assessment of the legendary guitarist’s career. From his early Jack Johnson-influenced pop-rock days, Mayer has seemingly gone in every direction musically over the past two decades. With multiple albums flirting with country and folk, live albums that showcase his blues influence and his extended run with Dead and Co. over the past few years, Mayer continually flexes his versatility wherever he goes.
Myers’ connection with Mayer shouldn’t come as a huge surprise given that he has been teasing his cover of “Man On The Side,” a song written and performed by both Mayer and Zac Brown Band’s Clay Cook, for quite a while now. Appearing on Myers’ upcoming debut album, The Select, the “Drinkin’ Alone” singer noted that it is his favorite song on the record, and based on TikTok videos alone, I’d say it’s going to be a fan-favorite as well.
