American Idol Season 24 has officially begun its Hollywood Week performances, continuing its Music City takeover in Nashville, Tennessee. During the competition’s first round of auditions at Belmont, one 25-year-old mother, Hannah Harper, made her mark as a fan favorite thanks to an emotional performance of her original song, “String Cheese.”
If you haven’t already seen the viral clip, which now has over 13.4 million views on TikTok, it’s an incredibly vulnerable track about Harper’s healing journey after postpartum. Fair warning for moms out there like Carrie Underwood, who also teared up during the audition, watch with tissues in hand.
Following the performance, the season 4 American Idol winner and judge proclaimed, “Well, that’s about the most relatable song I think I’ve ever heard.” With both Hannah’s spectacular vocals and the raw lyricism that touched all of the viewers across America during this second episode, she was a surefire advancement to the next round.
Many were eager to see what the Missouri native had to offer beyond her original. For her first cover performance on the show, she performed Lee Ann Womack’s 1998 single, “A Little Past Little Rock.”
Vocally, the song is incredibly difficult to sing, but Hannah hit the mark with her sweet country voice, melting like butter with every line. Judges, Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Underwood were all loving it from the first line, celebrating her flawless delivery together. For many watching, if you’re not a die-hard fan of the song, you probably wouldn’t have even noticed she jumbled the words a few times but recovered seamlessly.
Ending the song with a beautifully drawn-out note, beyond the hiccups, Hannah’s performance was one of the best of the night, echoed by the audience and judges’ praise. Still backstage before the voting rounds, she started kicking herself for the mess-ups, saying, “I got excited. I forgot the words. I didn’t come in on the right spot, but I sure hope I did enough to make it to the next round.”
The judges did note the error, but sure enough, they took it as a sign of professionalism. Bryan exclaimed, “She jumbled the lyrics too and got through it,” with Richie adding, “And she handled it and didn’t even bump.”
Despite what Hannah thought may be an end to her Idol journey, her raw talent mixed with the ability to bounce back flawlessly ultimately advanced her to the Golden Room. Here, the advanced artists will wait until one major cut at the end of the round before advancing to the Top 30.
Something tells me that the judges’ faith and admiration for Hannah’s unique yet transcending story, along with her standout vocals, will continue to push her far in this season. The second part of Hollywood Week will air next Monday at 8/7c as the judges continue to weed through a total of 127 singers vying for a Top 30 spot.
