The Voice officially kicked off its 29th season on NBC last night, February 23, 2026. This year, the singing competition is implementing a new “Battle of Champions” theme featuring only three coaches: Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Adam Levine.
Diverting from the classic four-chair panel, the show is introducing this “triple turn competition” along with a new rule, where during the blind auditions, the coach with the most artists on their team who received a 3-chair turn around will earn a special leg up in the competition: the Super Steal.
Despite these new spice-ups to the typical format, the night was consistently another great start to this Voice season, with a round-up of fresh faces vying for their spot on a team. The two-hour-long intro episode featured some promising voices, one of being North Carolina teen, Julia Golden.
Singing the fan favorite, Deana Carter’s 1996 “Strawberry Wine,” it was evident from the first note that she was a surefire turnaround. Taking the stage with undeniable confidence, her voice is the perfect mix of soul and sweetness that immediately had the audience applauding.
Clarkson, Legend, and Levine were all visibly marinating in her incredible performance and impeccable high notes. Legend flipped his chair around first before Golden drew out the last note with impeccable breath that ultimately led Clarkson to decisively turn around as well.
Golden, who ended up choosing to join Team Kelly, already has a number of singles and two EPs available for streaming, with her most recent release, “Meant to Be,” dropping this past February 5. There’s no doubt that the aspiring artist, already regularly performing at gigs in Nashville and North Carolina, could join the leading country ladies who have successfully won The Voice, like Cassadee Pope (S3) and Danielle Bradbery (S4).
Even without a win, the show was notably a big stepping stone for past contestants like RIAA’s Highest Certified Country artist, Morgan Wallen (S6), Jake Worthington (S6), and RaeLynn (S2). As Golden continues to perform under the guidance of coach and American Idol Season 1 winner, Kelly Clarkson, it’ll be exciting to watch what else this blossoming bud of a star has to offer.
The coaches will continue to build their teams of 10 artists over the next two weeks of Blind Auditions, continuing next Monday, March 2, at 9 p.m EST on NBC and streaming the following day on Peacock.
