Always a good day when Turnpike drops.
Despite not releasing any new music in 2024, the Turnpike Troubadours have steadily put together a fantastic year. Between actively touring throughout 2024 and their stunning involvement in Cross Canadian Ragweed’s reunion shows slated for April 2025, it’s safe to say that the Oklahoman band is officially back.
Today, Turnpike decided to cap off their successful year with a surprise collaboration with Western AF, releasing a 4-song live EP featuring “Good Lord Lorrie” and more.
For those unfamiliar with Western AF, it is a live performance video production that primarily focuses on highlighting some of the best, authentic artists in country music. Working with everyone from Charley Crockett and Colter Wall to Sierra Ferrell and The Red Clay Strays, Western AF has built up a long history of creating some of the best performance videos for the hottest independent acts in the genre.
As explained in Western AF’s Instagram post, the EP was two years in the making, “Friends and neighbors, we’re here to say that dreams really do come true. It began when Turnpike took the stage at Cain’s in early 2022. A few months later, we joined them at Under the Big Sky in Montana, marking the start of what would become a two-year effort to bring this session to life.”
To say it was worth the wait would be an understatement. Featuring “Good Lord Lorrie,” “Pay No Rent,” “Mean Old Sun” and “Brought Me,” the EP is undoubtedly Turnpike in their sweet spot. It’s not a well-kept secret that Turnpike is one of the most talented bands in the genre, and this live EP once again proves it.
Whether it’s Kyle Nix’s brilliant fiddle playing, Evan Felker’s vocals which seem to only get better with age or Hank Early’s banjo on “Mean Old Sun,” every member of the band has their moment to shine here, and it could not sound better.
