Seven years ago, the same girl who took home a record-breaking seven awards on Sunday night, May 17, at the ACM awards, was once recording cover videos from her bedroom.
Repping an Alabama t-shirt, classic 2019 eyebrows, and blonde highlighted side-parted hair that many would claim “doesn’t even look like her,” the then 20-year-old Ella Langley was just on the brink of kickstarting her career. When Langley says that she truly has been singing all her life, she’s not kidding, with her social media still holding a whole archive of her early days of covers.
Marking the same year Langley took the leap to officially drop out of Auburn and move to Nashville, she posted this April 2019 cover of the ultimate crossover, singing Whiskey Myers’ “Stone.” Now, while she sounds insanely young in comparison to her voice on her recent Dandelion album, her sweet vocals absolutely rip on the East Texas band’s 2016 track, which has since become their second most-streamed song and 2x platinum certified by the RIAA.
As Langley continues to blow up into the mega star she is today, traversing the country realm with her chart-topping hits, “Choosin’ Texas” and “Be Her” remaining on Billboard Hot 100, it’s crazy to see her strip things down with this red dirt staple. For those just now hopping on the Ella train, this kind of gritty, country-grunge influence is actually a lot more apparent on her earlier tracks, especially on her EP Excuse The Mess, with songs like “Don’t We All,” “Where You Left It,” and her Koe Wetzel collab, “That’s Why We Fight,” yielding a similar vibe to this cover.
Unfortunately now adays about the only covers we get from the ACM Female Vocalist of the Year are her on-stage go-to, Gretchen Wilson’s, “Here For The Party,” and her fan favorite rendition of Toby Keith’s “Wish I Didn’t Know Now.” Both remain staples on her 2026 headlining Dandelion tour, which will start back up in a month on June 18 in Oklahoma City.
