Mitchell Tenpenny, Ella Langley, and Lauren Alaina took the crowd TO CHURCH at a recent charity event for US101’s Heart Strings For Hope in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
In support of St. Jude’s Children Hospital, the three singer-songwriters, along withTucker Wetmore, were the headlining acts at this intimate benefit concert, and the crossover produced an absolutely ethereal performance during the night. Tenpenny stole the show with his rendition of the Goo Goo Dolls’ 1998 hit, “Iris,” along with his 2018 single, “Drunk Me,” a mashup he’s no stranger to performing.
This time around, two of the best female voices in country music lent their harmonizing vocals for arguably one of the most magical, choir-like acoustic versions. With Tenpenny leading the performance, Alaina pipes in on the harmonies, and Langley sings the background, repeating echoes of “no hangover.”
The night was filled with all four of the artists performing some of their biggest hits, yet I think it’s safe to say that, with the audience’s erupting applause, this was one of the best moments. Tenpenny released his own recorded cover of “Iris” back in April 2024, but with the melding of his “Drunk Me” along with the incredible female harmonies is basically begging for a new rendition.
Arguably, Langley’s interjections in this version are what really tip it over the edge of greatness, and while the 26-year-old has pretty much proven she can smash any cover, I’m a sucker for a country-ified version of any song, and this performance has me begging for more ’90s alt throwbacks from her. She’ll soon return to the stage this upcoming May for her 2026 Dandelion tour, continuing throughout the summer in support of her April album release.
