I’d pay GOOD money to witness this many legendary artists on one stage again.
Back in 2015, (which is now ten years ago, holy sh*t), a plethora of country music’s biggest stars teamed up at the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas to pay tribute to the legendary, Waylon Jennings.
Nearly two years later, CMT aired the special event for those who weren’t able to make it out to the Lodestar state, titled Outlaw: Celebrating the Music of Waylon Jennings.
Throughout the event, fans witnessed a performance of “Lonesome, On’ry and Mean” from Eric Church, a cover of “I Ain’t Living Long Like This” from Chris Stapleton and his wife, Morgane, and a duet of “I Can Get Off on You” by none other than Willie Nelson and Sturgill Simpson.
But the highlight of the night came when those artists joined forces for one big ole performance of Waylon’s #1 hit, “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love).”
Luckenback was written by Chips Moman, as well as Bobby Emmons, and was released in 1977 as the first single from Jennings’ critically acclaimed album, Ol’ Waylon. Although it became one of his most successful songs of all time, the Highwaymen member admitted he never wanted to cut it:
“I knew it was a hit song, even though I didn’t like it, and still don’t.”
Watch Toby Keith, Sturgill Simpson, Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Chris and Morgane Stapleton, Alison Krauss, Jamey Johnson, Ryan Bingham, Eric Church and more perform the hit song here:
