We are so back.
After setting the alternative country scene ablaze back in February by announcing that they were in the studio working on new music with Jay Joyce, Whiskey Myers fans everywhere have been patiently waiting for the West Texas band to officially announce a new album.
They added even more fuel to the fire last week, posting a series of videos on social media of a CRT television counting down from 49. With the final video counting all the way down to one being posted this morning, it was only a matter a time for an official album announcement.
Though the final video in the series has yet to be uploaded, it has officially been revealed that their seventh studio album, Whomp Whack Thunder, will be released on September 26, and their lead single, “Time Bomb,” is out now.
As previously mentioned, Whomp Whack Thunder will be produced by none other than Grammy-winning producer, Jay Joyce, who has worked with of Eric Church, Lainey Wilson, Brothers Osborne, Cage the Elephant, Ashley McBryde, The Black Crowes and more. When it was initially announced, it felt like a match made in heaven to pair Whiskey Myers with Joyce, and judging by “Time Bomb” it is nothing short of one.
Though it’s been nearly three years since they’ve released new music, it doesn’t feel like they missed a single beat on “Time Bomb.” With infectious electric guitar riffs that feel right at home on a Lynyrd Skynyrd record and frontman, Cody Cannon’s, vocals only getting better with age, Whiskey Myers prove once again why they’re one of the best in the business. You seriously cannot ask for more from a modern Southern rock band.
It’s no stretch to say that Whiskey Myers has been creating classic tracks since their breakthrough record, Firewater, back in 2011 with “Virginia” and “Broken Window Serenade,” in particular, still being referenced and posted regularly today. It was clear that Cannon and Co. took the support to heart when they said, “We’ve seen that y’all have been listening to our music more now than ever before, and we can’t wait for y’all to hear this new stuff,” and it shows here on the lead single.
Judging by the early reactions on X, it looks like fans and critics alike are already crowning “Time Bomb” another winner.
