Dylan Gossett has had a busy start to the year. Between touring with Noah Kahan on his Australian tour, picking up his first RIAA-certified gold record for Coal, and making his first appearance inside the Top 20 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart, the Texan singer/songwriter has quickly become one of the hottest new artists in the genre. And today, he is back with a brand new track, Somewhere Between.
Gossett first teased the song on Instagram back on February 12, describing the track as “a song about a guy who lives on a train.” He also noted that it was his mom’s favorite song.
Less than two weeks later, the Between Oak Trees singer officially announced that the song would be released on Friday, March 1.
In the Instagram post announcing Somewhere Between’s release, Gossett noted how he was inspired to write the song after watching a video about a man living on a train, “A couple years ago I saw a video of a guy who lives on a train and decided to write a song about it. I wrote it for fun and never imagined I would ever actually release it, but here we are. Loved bringing it to life.”
The Texan singer/songwriter also added, “I was struck by his story and his true independence — I
wanted to create my own version of his story. The resulting song is a high-energy narrative about a wandering man, running away from his past, traveling state-to-state; each night finding a new home.”
Somewhere Between once again shows why Gossett is one of the most exciting new artists in the genre. The transition to a fuller sound, complete with percussion and a delightful banjo, simply sounds incredible and results in an absolute boot-stomper. The way Dylan plays with a bluegrass-inspired style here sounds much different than the low-fi songs that he’s written in the past, and it works wonders.
With Gossett, the first instinct will always be to praise his lyrics and storytelling. And while they’re great here, as usual, it’s his vocal performance that really stands out on Somewhere Between. There’s a certain beauty in the way his raw and vulnerable vocals hit the notes present in the latter half of the song.
Particularly, the way he belts “One day I will come home” on the bridge is nothing short of chill-inducing. It perfectly captures the sense of longing and wandering present on the track.
On top of the brand new song, Gossett also announced the release of his second studio EP, Songs in the Gravel, which releases on March 22. His first major label EP with Big Loud Texas and Mercury Records will contain Bitter Winds and Somewhere Between, along with two additional songs.
Songs in the Gravel serves as a follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut EP, No Better Time, which was written, recorded, produced and mixed independently by Gossett himself.
