What a monstrous year for Jelly Roll.
The 39 year-old CMA New Artist of the Year has officially scored his third #1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart with “Save Me,” featuring Lainey Wilson.
This marks Lainey’s 4th overall #1 on the chart, including her other feature on HARDY’s “wait in the truck,” and the fastest climb to the top spot for either artist at just 13 weeks.
Save Me was originally released in 2020 off Jelly Roll’s album, Self Medicated, but was re-released with Lainey back in May as the second single off Whitsitt Chapel.
The duo performed the song together at the ACM Awards and again on the finale of American Idol‘s 21st season. Both performances will be featured below.
The track was written by Jelly Roll (whose real name is Jason Deford), as well as David Ray Stevens, who also helped co-write Son of a Sinner.
Jelly Roll reflected on the inspiration for the song in a recent interview with Apple Music :
“It was the middle of the pandemic. And when I say middle of it, I mean we were spraying boxes with Lysol. And I just couldn’t sit through that. I was like, “We got to work.” And I was in such a dark space because of that; I knew I needed to write.
My father had just died a year before. So I’m still learning how to grieve through that. And then I’m like, “We got to write. I got to get this out of me.” So “Save Me” came from a really dark space. It’s still really hard to sing.”

That’s my life how I feel. Everytime I hear the song I cry like a baby. Thank you both for a real song.
