It’s officially December, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and that means it is time for Christmas music.
Country artists are no strangers to Christmas tunes, with legends such as Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard releasing songs to modern-day stars, Cody Johnson and Kacey Musgraves releasing full Christmas albums.
Today, however, one of today’s most notorious outlaws, Koe Wetzel, has thrown his hat in the Christmas ring (or should I say wreath?).
Wetzel teased the EP’s release back on November 20 on Instagram with a Reel of a drunken Santa sitting at a bar with the caption “Time to wake this fella up.” Fans began clamoring online at the thought of a Wetzel Christmas album.
He took to Instagram on Tuesday to officially announce the EP’s December 1st release with a hilarious Instagram Reel of him and the drunken Santa bantering and eventually getting into a fight at a bar.
In his typical somber fashion, Wetzel picked three of the most longing Christmas songs out there: The Eagles’ Please Come Home For Christmas, Elvis’ Blue Christmas and Bing Crosby’s I’ll Be Home For Christmas.
It’s no surprise that Wetzel chose some of the most depressing Christmas songs out there, being that he’s known for songs such as Drunk Driving, Good Die Young and Love.
With three songs teasing Wetzel’s further dive into the Christmas genre, it makes one wonder if he will ever release any original Christmas songs in the future. With someone as prolific as a writer as Koe is, it seems like the possibilities for Christmas songs are endless with him.
Could we get a rockin’ song about drinking with Santa? A song about drunk driving in Santa’s sleigh? Or even a straightforward reflection on a lost love during the holidays?
Regardless, we are greeted by three fantastic covers of some of the best sad Christmas songs out there today that are sure to satisfy fans of sad holiday tracks and the Something to Talk About singer himself.
