While we’re only two weeks into Season 30 of The Voice, like many fans, I’ve been sitting back and patiently waiting for someone to make the obvious joke about Riley Green’s rumored love triangle drama.
After Green inadvertently added fuel to the rumors surrounding him and Megan Moroney by teasing “P.O.S.” on social media the very same day Moroney dropped her Cloud 9 album (even though he’s denied on multiple occasions that there was any connection between the two), fans haven’t exactly stopped playing into the speculation. Including The Voice, who I have a feeling knew exactly what they were doing when they slipped one of the Georgia natives’ songs into the show to troll Green.
26-year-old contestant Anna McElroy absolutely dominated the NBC stage with her cover of Maren Morris’ “80s Mercedes,” scoring a chair turn from Kelly, Green, and Queen Latifah. And boy did Kelly fight hard to convince the aspiring country singer to join her team, which unfortunately is pretty hard to do when the contestant at hand is an Alabama native, and your coach competition is a 6’4″ blue-eyed, cowboy-hat-wearing crooner.
Kelly, whipping out her Texas accent for the occasion and once again reminding everyone that her team has actually won The Voice before, put up a pretty convincing fight. In the end, apparently Clarkson’s pleas worked, with Anna surprisingly choosing the American Idol alum over the more obvious country pick, Green.
The second Anna announced her decision, Clarkson shot out of her chair and rushed toward her newest protégé. And I know whoever was in charge of editing the transition song choices was having a proper giggle backstage with Megan Moroney’s “Man on the Moon,” immediately queued up for this moment.
Green, meanwhile, just sat there with a deadpan look before glancing over at Adam and laughing at Kelly’s excitement. Pointing the blame in his direction, he joked, “That’s on you. That’s messed up.”
Now all fans want is for a contestant to take it one step further and actually perform a Megan Moroney song during their blind audition. And while Green may continue to deny the rumors, I have a feeling Moroney, who’s openly joked that she made her songs “so obvious who it’s about that you could Google it,” would get a kick out of The Voice sneaking one of her songs into the moment.
Sticking to a Monday and Tuesday airing schedule this fall, the show will return once again tonight, September 29, on NBC at 8 p.m. ET, along with yesterday’s new episode streaming currently on Peacock.
