As if we all didn’t already know, Megan Moroney has pretty much now officially confirmed that her track, “Who Hurt You,” is, in fact, about Riley Green.

It was only a matter of time on release day for her February 2026 album, Cloud 9, before fan speculation about the country artist who inspired track 14 immediately started to blow up the internet. Moroney was very vocal about the fact that she was not holding back on this record, noting that she, “said this whole album with my chest.”

Upon hearing the song’s lyrics about the scorned lover’s “manufactured smile” and “the devil went down to Georgia, then he crossed the Bama line” (referencing the two’s home states), it was pretty hard not to connect the dots that this track was taking a jab at the 37-year-old country star. The song had a number of other uncanny coincidences alluding to the two’s rumored romance, like Moroney’s visit to Green’s “hometown happy hours” and when Green was later spotted with a young 21-year-old in Panama City Beach, Florida: “You said you needed less flashy, more fun…of course she’s 21.”

The “Tennessee Orange” singer is now doubling down on the fact that without having to say his first and last name, she wanted it to be pretty obvious who this track was about. In her latest Cosmopolitan feature story, Moroney spoke with the magazine ahead of her sold-out show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where she was, of course, asked the time-old question about the inspiration behind her songs.

Prefacing the question as, “Are there any songs off of Cloud 9 that you’ve had friends, family, or anyone reach out and say, ‘Girl, who’s this about? What happened?,’ Moroney very clearly laid out the facts about the hit that now has over 20 million streams on Spotify alone. She responded, “In ‘Who Hurt You,’ I made it so obvious who it’s about that it was, like, you could Google it, and that was the point of ‘Who Hurt You.'”

So for anyone still curious who the song is about, per Moroney’s advice: just Google it, and you’re bound to see Green’s face pop up on every article. With the pink-themed project marking her third album, she noted that she had grown “frustrated with people” trying to pick apart the hints in her songs and still continuing to ask “who is it about?”

She shared this time around, “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m just gonna lay it out there. I might as well put his first and last name in it.'” Adding, “Songwriting is fun, and it’s not meant to be taken so seriously.”

While we may never know the full story behind country music’s Georgia girl and the Duckman’s slighted relationship, the track certainly has become a fun one for her fans to scream back at her on stage on her 2026 Cloud 9 tour. Returning to the road with the hit tomorrow night, July 24 at the Great Jones Country Fair, Moroney will wrap up her arena stops on August 21 in Nashville before heading to the UK in late September.
