This is the type of performance that warrants a raised hand in the air, praising along while watching.

In celebration of the upcoming film I Can Only Imagine 2, Trace Adkins joined Christian band MercyMe on stage at the Grand Ole Opry last Friday, February 13. A week ahead of the film’s premiere, the group performed MercyMe’s 2001 hit, “I Can Only Imagine,” honoring the movie’s namesake.
The hit song was the original inspiration for the first film released in March 2018, in which Adkins played Scott Brickell, the manager for MercyMe. With Adkins returning to his acting role in the sequel, alongside Milo Ventimiglia, Dennis Quaid, and Arielle Kebbel, it was only fitting that he also showcase his singing roots for this live performance.
This also marks the second time that MercyMe has paired up with Adkins for a performance of this goosebump-inducing song. Around the time of the original film’s release, they took the stage together at the K-Love Fan Awards.
Last Friday’s high-energy performance was an incredible display of faith, with the Opry audience singing along and erupting in applause at the end of the performance. This live rendition from Adkins may also soon become a rarity, given that the “You’re Gonna Miss This ” singer has recently been hinting at retiring.
With a 30-year career legacy behind him, the ‘90s country icon is currently honoring the anniversary of his success with a U.S Headlining Tour that launched this past January and will continue throughout September. Adkins told Entertainment Tonight during a red carpet interview, “I’m gonna tour hard this year. But then I can’t promise anything after that.”
For fans hoping to catch the 64-year-old country legend one last time, he still has 22 stops ahead of him, and of course, starting tomorrow, you can catch him on the big screen in I Can Only Imagine 2.
