Riley Green was feeling pretty generous with the microphone this past weekend, and it led to an unexpectedly incredible duet.
During his show on Sunday, June 20, at the York State Fair, the “Worst Way” singer spotted a young man in the front row holding up a sign. Green, now known as a bit of a duet savant thanks to collaborations such as “You Look Like You Love Me” and “Don’t Mind If I Do” with Ella Langley, and “Half of Me” with Thomas Rhett, couldn’t ignore the opportunity. But this fan had a different duet in mind: Green’s 2024 tearjerker, “Jesus Saves.”
He pointed on into the crowd and acknowledged the request…but not without a little test beforehand. “He says he wants to sing a song called Jesus Saves with me,” Green said to the crowd. “I gotta tell you, this is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. So what we’re gonna have to do is give you a little test to see if you can or not.”
This was equally a hilarious and clever move on Green’s behalf to vet out the aspiring singer, especially given it’s such a special song. Before inviting the fan, Logan Chalk, on stage, Green had a mic brought down to him in the pit. “We’re gonna let him sing a little bit of it, and if it’s bad, you just have to stay there. But if it’s good enough, then you’re gonna get to come up.”
Showing not a lick of stage fright, Chalk took the mic from the security guard and Green instructed him to sing a few lines from the chorus. Chalk barely manages to even get two verses in, starting with “My Daddy left for another woman,” before Green abruptly cuts in, “Come on up here, it’s fine.”
It’s evident the fan wowed the crowd and Green as he jokingly proclaims, “Matter of fact, he might’ve been too good, he might have to stay down there.” In just a matter of seconds, the fan has jumped over the barricade, hopped up on stage, and is shaking hands with the country superstar while he waits for a stool and a microphone to be brought out.
As Green said in the moment, Chalk was “fresh out of the crowd, ready to go.” Grinning ear to ear, as he sits alongside Green and prepares to sing the first verse. The young man’s vocals are absolutely stellar, and the crowd’s erupting cheers reflect that fact. Green stepped back to let Chalk have his moment, harmonizing with him throughout the chorus.
It turns out Chalk (@LoganChalkMusic on Instagram) is an aspiring musician from Maryland, and with a voice like that, it makes perfect sense. Judging by the enthusiastic comments flooding Green’s TikTok post of the moment, this performance is sure to be a big boost for his budding career.
Later in the night, Green also invited another fan from the crowd to sing Ella Langley’s parts on “Don’t Mind If I Do.” A TikTok clip from @meggsoswag shows the young woman belting out the duet flawlessly. It’s safe to say Green went two for two with his guest performers. At this point, American Idol might want to start scouting directly from Riley Green’s shows.
