    Long live Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Back in December of last year, Whiskey Myers shared a clip to Instagram from a recent show in which they covered the Lynyrd Skynyrd deep cut, “Things Goin’ On.”

The clip featured no frills or introduction beyond a simple caption that read “Just a little Skynyrd for y’all.”

The song choice is interesting, as it is not one of Skynyrd’s more well known. Off their 1973 debut album Pronounced ‘Leh-‘Nerd ‘Skin-‘Nerd, “Things Goin’ On” was one of the band’s initial audition tapes before earning them a record deal, but the protest song was overshadowed on the record by the presence of two of Skynyrd’s biggest hits, Free Bird and Simple Man.

Whiskey Myers has long cited Skynyrd as one of their inspirations, along with Hank Williams Jr. and Jamey Johnson. Founding members Cody Cannon and John Jeffers played Skynyrd’s music while learning the guitar together, and Myers even opened for the band in their early days.

One fan in the comments said it best: “Arguably the ONLY band today that could do Skynyrd justice.”Whiskey Myers may just be the closest thing to true southern rock in today’s music landscape, and the similarities between the two bands makes Myers the perfect choice to execute this track. Here’s to hoping we get a studio cut of a Skynyrd cover on the next album.
