Riley Green Shares New Unreleased Song, “I Couldn’t Fit That On A Sign” And It Will Have You All the Way In Your Feels

On Friday Riley Green shared a video to his Instagram featuring himself singing an unreleased song seemingly titled, “I Couldn’t Fit That On a Sign.”

The clip is simple, with Green sitting on a barstool with his guitar and some bass hung on the wall behind him while the rain falls outside. The weather helped set the atmosphere beautifully, and Green acknowledged this, saying “Don’t mind the rain on the tin roof in the background.”

The song sees Green stopping to talk to a homeless man on the street corner to ask him how he got there, and the man explaining how he ended up in his position after serving in the army. After detailing all that went wrong, the man explains that he simply wrote “Jesus Saves” because, as he says, “there ain’t no way I could fit that on a sign.”

This isn’t the type of song we’ve seen from Riley in the past. Green is a talented songwriter, but we rarely see him step outside of his life experiences when it comes to subject matter. This type of third person story telling isn’t as common in today’s country music, but it’s a powerful tool when used correctly, and it was a brilliant choice here.

Often when artists release these little teasers we tend to get a short snippet of the track, but at over three minutes, Green’s video shows off the entire song. I think giving us the entire track here was the right move, even if it does spoil a potential release later down the line. The narrative structure of the song would lose a lot of its emotional connection if we only got a 20 second clip, and the song would be difficult to follow without the full context of the verses.

Riley has a history of his unreleased work catching on with his audience. This is in large part due to his lighter release schedule, leaving listeners hanging on to whatever they can get from the Alabama native. His song “Don’t Make Them Like That No More” was a longtime fan favorite before finally being included on his 2023 record Ain’t My Last Rodeo. Don’t be surprised if this track does the same.

I’d love to see Riley continue to branch out and take more creative risks like this. We all love his good ole boy persona and odes to southern living, but glimpses like this show he has the ability to take his career to another level.

Here’s hoping for a whole lot more of this in 2024.
