Multi-platinum country artist, songwriter, father to three, and apparently… the owner of a trash truck company?
Who knew Dylan Scott had a secret side hustle as a garbage man? Not many people can say that their miscellaneous COVID-19 hobbies worked out, except for apparently the 35-year-old singer who bought a used trash truck on a whim amidst the worldwide pandemic.
Scott opened up about the endeavour on a recent appearance on the Like A Farmer Podcast, noting that he bought the 2004 “hunk of junk” for $10,000 along with a contract from a local town, Chatham, Louisiana, to start picking up trash in the area. Sure, the truck needed a little maintenance, worth about five grand, but it opened the door to expanding their business into the surrounding city neighborhoods, noting, “from that moment on we’ve been in business five years now.”
This means that right around the time Scott was out singing his 2021 hit “New Truck,” he was simultaneously building a fleet of trucks, employees, and customers. Luckily, according to his website, “The Trash Guys” is more than just Scott; it was co-founded alongside his good friend Jordan Powell, whom he met right before the business venture.
Powell had just been unemployed due to oil field layoffs and needed work with a newborn at home, and the two bonded over the lack of trash services at their homes. The idea sparked after they had purchased an initial trailer to pick up trash for anyone around their area willing to pay for the services.
After embarking on their partnership with Chatham and later buying a brand-new second trash track, the boys have continued to grow their hometown business into a “household name in Northeast Louisiana.” In 2024, they also welcomed Trey McLemore as a new partner to the team, servicing 10,000 homes and collecting trash for over 500 businesses.
Turns out this town has been too good to Scott, who continues to lend a hand in everything, partnering with local community school sports teams, Keep Union Beautiful, the Louisian Cancer Foundation, while continuing to play a number of fairs and festivals throughout the summer.
