Some songs begin with a carefully planned concept, while others reveal their meaning during the creation process. For Gracie Boots, “Teenage Reality” was definitely of the latter kind. Boots had been carrying the title for some time, but when she started working on it at the piano, she did not have a story to tell. Instead, Boots started writing with a verse that reflected her mood of the moment.
A melody soon appeared that Boots could not get out of her head. That melody eventually became the chorus, and the rest of the song followed with surprising speed. Within roughly two hours, “Teenage Reality” had taken shape, requiring very few changes after the first draft. The experience was unusual enough to stand out in Boots’ songwriting process, and the finished song eventually became the lead single for her upcoming EP of the same name.
“The thing is that typically when songs come together this quickly for me it is because I know what I am feeling and what I need to get off my chest,” says Gracie Boots. So, that impulsive nature is still what makes the song special. Instead of creating the record with a predefined meaning, she allowed her emotions to lead and found the meaning in the process.
Those emotions had a reason and were linked to Gracie Boots’ experience right before she started writing the song. She had just come back from a trip where she met a group of songwriters who were exceptionally supportive of her music. Being around people who encouraged her work and made her feel comfortable sharing her thoughts gave Boots a different perspective on herself.
“With these new friends I could share anything because I felt cherished and supported,” she remembers. “I felt like I was surrounded by people who genuinely supported my music and wanted to see where it could go.” The contrast between herself in two different environments made Boots think of herself and realize that at home she was very cautious and did not share what she was really feeling inside.
This thought became one of the key aspects of “Teenage Reality.” There are certain emotions she keeps locked inside, not because she wants to hide them but because she does not want to create conflicts and expose herself to possible judgment. “Teenage Reality” was the perfect medium where she could process those emotions and thoughts without trying to find any solution.
One of the most personal examples comes from Gracie Boots’ experience following a horseback riding injury. She had spent eleven years riding competitively, making horses a major part of her life before a serious knee injury altered that path. When people asked how she was doing, she often responded that everything was fine, even though the experience had taken away something she considered a lifeline. The gap between her answer and what she was actually feeling became part of the emotional world surrounding the record.
For Boots, songwriting has provided a way to process experiences that can be difficult to articulate in ordinary conversation. Recording “Teenage Reality” also reinforced how deeply she wants music to fit into her future. What began as a melody and a collection of feelings at a piano ultimately became a defining introduction to a new chapter in her development as a singer and songwriter.
“I think the single has helped me understand how important music is to me and how much I love songwriting,” she says. So, the importance of “Teenage Reality” goes beyond being the lead single for her EP and reveals a moment when Gracie Boots discovered the difference between hiding her emotions and exploring them in music.
