Fair warning: this audition is the ultimate tear-jerker.
Last night, February 16, marked the fourth episode of American Idol’s 24th season. With Luke Bryan, season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie seated at the judges’ table, the show continued its opening round of auditions, taped at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.
In an incredibly heavy-hitting start to the night, one young artist completely stole the night with his tribute performance to his late mother. 22-year-old Mor Ilderton, who you may recognize from Michael Bublé’s team on The Voice season 26, returned to television with a heartfelt audition on American Idol, performing his original song, “Strong.”
Face to face with the judges, Ilderton (who goes by just ‘Mor’), revealed the shocking inspiration behind the song, saying, “My Dad ended my mom’s life, it’s about seeing my mom’s picture for the first time and not knowing her and just kinda looking at a stranger and just pouring my emotions out of that through this song.” Ilderton, whose mother passed away from strangulation when he was just two years old, then moved in with his Nana, Sandy, who joined him at the audition (without his knowledge).
Fighting back the emotions while performing this highly vulnerable song, Ilderton stumbled slightly on his first attempt at strumming. With encouragement from the judges, he shook off his nerves and tried again. Before he restarted, a production team member quietly brought his grandmother into the audition room, allowing her to witness the special tribute.
Beyond being an incredibly touching song, Ilderton delivers it with such gritty, evocative sorrow that captivated everyone in the room. With verses such as, “You were taken from me years ago, someone I never got to know, and now I can hardly speak when I see your face. Mama, I hope you found your way home,” all three judges, along with his grandmother, were struggling to hold back tears right along with the viewers at home.
Of course, after the powerful performance, judges Bryan, Underwood, and Richie all hopped up on their feet for a standing ovation. Underwood summed it up best, saying, “I felt like you went somewhere else when you were singing. It was like you weren’t here. In a good way.”
Praising him for his undeniable talent, songwriting skills, and, as Luke Bryan pointed out, “having the look,” he was a surefire golden ticket of the night and headed straight to Hollywood. Before sending him through, the show delivered one final heartwarming moment when his grandmother surprised him onstage with a hug. “I haven’t been on an airplane for like 25 plus years,” she exclaimed.
With three astounding yeses across the board, Ilderton will join the rest of the class of Idol University for round two in Hollywood next week on February 23. For those who haven’t cried enough watching his Idol performance, the original song “Strong” was previously released in October 2025 and is currently available on all major streaming platforms.
