I can’t say I expected to hear Peyton Manning “singing” on a country song on this fine Monday morning, but…here we are.
The retired NFL quarterback and previous CMA Award host is the latest sports personality to take a swing at the music industry. But with Riley Green by his side and some hilariously quippy lyrics, at least this attempt is far better news than Pat McAfee’s.
Everybody’s favorite Alabama star and dedicated Crimson Tide fan teamed up with Manning, who’s well known for his Tennessee pride (and playing days back in the ’90s), to put their rivalry to the test on their new song, “Alabama Vs. Tennessee.” And, of course, the timing couldn’t be more fitting. The Third Saturday in October is quickly approaching on Oct. 17, when Alabama heads to Neyland Stadium to take on the Volunteers.
In Green’s cheeky new track, the two die-hard fans take their rivalry to the bar, trading playful jabs before eventually finding a little common ground (aka wearin’ boots, drinkin’ beer, listening to Hank & Merle, and a shared love for country girls). It’s essentially the SEC’s version of “Why Can’t We Be Friends?”.
It’s also pretty hilarious to hear the Super Bowl champ test out his singing skills— and even pull out the fiddle— for the clever tune. Basically serving as a PSA to fellow Alabama and Tennessee fans, the chorus sums it up best: “It ain’t you going up against me; it’s Alabama versus Tennessee.”
Adding to Green’s packed run of new music over the past few weeks following the release of his new album, That’s Just Me, the song is officially out now on streaming platforms alongside a brand new honky-tonk setting music video. Watch below:
