15 years ago, Scotty McCreery was just a 16-year-old North Carolina native, hoping to leave his days working at the cash register of his local grocery store for the big Hollywood stage on American Idol.
I, on the other hand, was madly immersed in the tenth season tight race between his co-star Lauren Alaina and would spend every Wednesday night texting in vote after vote for McCreery (sorry Lauren). If you recall, one of the best episodes of the whole show was when McCreery’s full circle moment came to fruition after country music star Josh Turner surprised him during the hometown episode, joining him for a rendition of his sultry audition song, “Your Man.”
Flash forward to 2026, and their never-ending homages to one another just keep getting better and better. If you thought their 2011 performance was a showstopper, earlier this May they solidified their duet relationship with an officially released revived version of “Your Man.” Given the impact the songs made on McCreery’s career, who better to return the favor and surprise Turner at his Wisconsin show with the official plaque celebrating his monumental accomplishment of the 2005 hit becoming 5x platinum certified by the RIAA?
Not only did “Your Man” sell over 5 million units, but he also received a 4x platinum certification for “Would You Go With Me” and Gold for “Me and God.” Adding to the real cherry on top, the Cedarburg venue where Turner was co-headlining Country in the Burg this past weekend also so happens to be just down the road from the Wisconsin audition location where McCreery first wowed the judges with his Idol rendition.
Turner posted a clip of the insane moment to his social media, calling McCreery’s surprise, “pretty surreal” and thanking the fans who, “have supported this song for the last 20 years and continue to let me live out this dream.” In the video, he jokingly pointed at his throwback picture plastered on the plaque, saying, “I don’t recognize that guy; he’s a lot younger than me.”
Not only was the song (co-written by Chris Stapleton, Chris DuBois and Jace Everett) Turner’s very first No.1 single, but the title track also earned two Grammy nominations. As for the album, which is celebrating its whopping 20th anniversary this year, Turner will return with an expanded anniversary edition featuring a bonus track, “Hard Headed,” with additional live recordings.
