From its creation, The Sammy Rose Band has always sought to be genre-defying. With the release of their new album Cowboy, the band has maintained their usual sound in terms of mixing elements of country, blues, pop, and alternative music through songs that come from personal experiences.
Country music has had its influence on the band as far as songwriting is concerned. The band has long been drawn to the way a country song can establish a beginning, middle, and end while allowing a character or situation to evolve along the way. This element has been incorporated into Cowboy despite its sounds going beyond the country genre.
The arrangements give the album its broader identity. Blues-inspired guitar riffs can lead into heavier passages influenced by rock and alternative music, while synths and keys introduce pop elements, particularly within the melodies of the choruses. This combination reflects the creative freedom that has been part of The Sammy Rose Band since their earliest days.
Finding the Direction for Cowboy
Initially, the band consisted of only two people: the lead artist herself, Sammy Rose, and her younger brother. They figured out what kind of music to play by choosing what songs they liked and disliked. Later, the band’s lineup was supplemented with a bassist and drummer, which gave them enough opportunities to develop their music style.
The direction for Cowboy became clearer while working on the album’s title track. When the band began laying down the keys for “Cowboy,” the song immediately gave Rose a stronger sense of where the group could go musically. “I knew I didn’t want us to be a pop country band, and I knew we weren’t rock,” she says. “But we have soul, with a bit of an edge. And the most important thing: we have stories to tell.”
The title track is one of the emotional bases for the whole album. In “Cowboy,” there are lyrics about falling in love with a person who will eventually bring pain and coming to that realization. The band described the record as one of the more vulnerable they have created.
Stories From Sammy Rose’s Florida
Some of the tracks on Cowboy have been brewing for many years. There are those that were penned when Sammy Rose was still a teen and some from her experiences in relationships, friendship, college life, and coming back home and seeing how the people she knew havechanged. With that time span, the upcoming album has the flavor of historical content without limiting itself to just one period of time.
The band and Rose’s connection to Florida also plays a role in their storytelling. While the state has been the subject of countless songs, The Sammy Rose Band wants to focus on the Florida they know personally and the people and experiences that have shaped their view of home. “There are tons of songs about Florida, but not about MY Florida,” Rose mentions.
As the album has just been released, the project represents a significant introduction to The Sammy Rose Band’s developing identity. Their influences may come from several directions, but the common thread remains the same: songs built around stories, experiences, and the freedom to tell them without fitting neatly into one category.
