Look, I’m all for shooting your shot, but maybe screaming at a superstar backstage in the parking lot through a grated fence isn’t necessarily the way to bag a date.
And unfortunately for Ella Langley, who was caught on the other end of this interaction… responding probably wasn’t a good idea either. The Billboard-history-making Alabama native has found herself at the center of another controversial dilemma (if you can even call it that), after a fan caught her at a bad moment after last night’s (Sept. 24) show in Knoxville.
Returning to the stage at the Food City Center for the first time following the news that her chart-topper “Choosin’ Texas” is now officially the longest-running No.1 in all of Billboard’s Hot 100 history, you’d think the show would’ve been nothing but butterflies and roses. And while there’s no denying she put on another great sold-out show (aside from Tennessee fans booing the mention of Texas during her radio hit), a now-viral clip from the night is putting a damper on the mood.
TikTok user Tiki, who apparently has over 472K followers on the platform, posted every Ella Fella’s dream to his page last night: a clip of him attempting to ask the 27-year-old out on a date. Clearly backstage in the parking lot of the venue, he yelled through the fence: “Ella, how many likes to take you on a date?”
Ella, standing with some of her bandmates and crew, stared with a straight face back at him, clearly unimpressed. She then responded, “Not enough in the world,” slightly nodding her head and frowning as she turned away.
Of course, her clapback has fueled a fire of debate on the internet, with some people upset over the seemingly sassy response and others defending her and her privacy. For the most part though, a large portion of the people commenting under the clip, which has now racked up more than 2.7 million views, have taken the video as yet another opportunity to question Langley’s character:
Others, however, sympathized with Langley and pointed out that @TIKI’s caught-off-guard question was fairly invasive and that a 10-second clip doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story:
While I have no doubt Ella’s more than accustomed to being “asked out on dates” by her looming fan base of crazed Ella Fella’s, at some point there’s only so much smiling and nodding you can do in response. And according to the “Dandelion” singer herself, she responded under the video in a since-deleted comment that she meant for her reply to be an attempt at “dark humor”:
Of course, even Langley’s attempt to clear the air ended up drawing another wave of criticism, which may explain why the comment was later deleted. In her defense, given Langley’s typically laid-back personality, this very well could have been nothing more than a misguided attempt to sassily play along with the bit. Not to mention— she allegedly already has a man.
If I were in her position, I have no doubt I’d react the same way, but then again, thank the Lord I’m not famous. Unfortunately for celebrities these days, the cold, hard reality is that you have to assume a camera could be on you at any moment.
Luckily for Langley, even a blip like this can’t interfere with her endless hot streak and devout fan base as she returns to the stage for two more shows this weekend in Columbus, Ohio tonight (Sept. 25) and Moline, Illinois tomorrow night (Sept. 26).
