Don’t get no better than these two.
Earlier this month, George Strait and Chris Stapleton brought the second leg of their joint-headlining stadium tour to the Bank of America Stadium where they performed for a sold-out crowd in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Per usual, tons of live performance videos surfaced on TikTok, and the one that stood out to me the most this time around was the duo’s cover of Townes Van Zandt’s 1972 hit, “Pancho and Lefty.”
Although it is arguably Van Zandt’s biggest song to date, “Pancho and Lefty” has been covered numerous times, most notably by Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson, whose version has currently sold the most copies and also went on to become a No. 1 single for the duo on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.
It seems that no matter who covers the 52 year-old classic song, it instantly becomes a hit. And although neither George or Chris have released actual studio versions, there’s no doubt in my mind the same rule would apply to them.
