The cover I didn’t think I needed.
At this point, the secret is out with Zach Top. With many proclaiming the Washington native as the savior of the classic ’90s sound that so many are craving, it’s no stretch to say that he’s one of the buzziest artists on social media at the moment.
Recently scoring his first-ever entries on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with his breakout hit, “Sounds Like The Radio,” and “I Never Lie,” Top is clearly here to stay as a regular on the charts.
However, before the release of “Sounds Like The Radio,” Top was just another up-and-coming artist with immense talent on TikTok, typically posting classic covers by everyone from George Strait and Alan Jackson to Randy Travis and Keith Whitley.
In May of 2021, he threw his followers a bit of a curveball and covered none other than Morgan Wallen’s 3x certified hit, “Somebody’s Problem,” and it is absolutely gold. Though I will say that “Somebody’s Problem” is easily one of Wallen’s best songs to date, there’s no doubt that Top makes it his own with his silky vocals and effortless fingerpicking.
In the text on the TikTok, Top took a lighthearted jab at Wallen, saying “If ‘Somebody’s Problem’ was a country song 😉,” clearly referencing how many critics of the “Last Night” singer claim that a majority of his music isn’t “real” country.
Top followed up the text by emphasizing that it was a joke (something you have to do on the internet these days) and praised the track, “Really, I think this is a great tune. Wanted to put my own spin on it.”
