Zach Top Is Under Fire For Calling Sobriety A “Trendy Fad” – “Next Person I Hear Say They Got Sober, I Wanna Hit ‘Em In The Head”

If there’s one thing about Zach Top, he’s going to enjoy an ice-cold beer… in moderation, that is.

The country music star never lies, especially about his opinions on alcohol consumption. As a good ole boy from Washington and given the avid beer drinking themes throughout his music, obviously, he’s not one to stray away from having a drink every once in a while.

Top couldn’t help but hold back these lifestyle opinions on a recent appearance on Bert Kreischer’s podcast, joking with the comedian that people need to stop taking their alcohol consumption SO far that they feel like they need to stop altogether. In the wise yet slightly controversial words of Top, “Keep yourself healthy enough that you can drink all your life.”

The two also agreed in their conversation that the whole concept of sobriety has become “trendy” in today’s world, mainly something that people tend to tout around. “Sobriety is such a fad-like, trendy thing right now, and the next person I hear say they got sober, it’s just like, I want to hit ’em in the head. We don’t need that, just be a normal guy and just drink a normal amount, and you can do it all your life, and you’re fine.”

They both agreed that the concept of sobriety is something a lot of people do for attention-seeking purposes (similar to running marathons just so you can post it on Instagram). Now obviously this is a comedy podcast, and the statement was meant in a lighthearted, pro-“beers-with-the-boys” kind of manner, and wasn’t intended to take a jab at those with serious alcohol addictions.

However, this is one of those topics that teeters on a very fine line of coming off as insensitive, and unfortunately, many took Top’s comments in a less-than-joking manner. Top’s quote on Country Chord’s social media post has now been flooded with people on both sides agreeing “hell ya” and others calling him out for the statement:

Treaty Oak Revival’s front man, Sam Canty, who also recently opened up about his milestone one year of sobriety just this past year, at a show last January, also chimed in:

While Top’s advice might be a little open-ended, at the end of the day, he’s just a guy who enjoys a “Beer With Breakfast” with a side of good country music. I mean, come on, he pretty much spells it out in his sophomore album that he’s not in it for his health.
