Chris Stapleton Admits His Wife Picks Most of the Tracks On His Albums: “She Has Excellent Taste in Songs”

One of country music’s true power couples.

In a recent interview with Cowboys and Indians magazine, Chris Stapleton covered a wide range of topics. One of the main themes was his relationship, both personally and professionally, with his wife Morgane.

The pair first met when they were both employed as songwriters at a publishing house in Nashville in 2003, when Chris was only 25 years old. In a story fit for a movie, the two’s first date (and presumably many after) was a songwriting session together. Talking about these unique nights together, Stapleton said:

“She would make the joke that I’d ask her to write songs at 8:00 on a Friday night. And she wasn’t wrong. Some things are electricity. Sometimes you just know those things intuitively about who your love interest is.“

The couple’s cowriting habits have lasted long into their marriage. Morgane is listed as a producer on Chris’ latest album Higher, and the way he tells it, she is one of the most influential people in his creative process.

“My wife picks the songs. Most of the songs are heavily influenced by things that she likes. She has excellent taste in songs.”

Chris’ songwriting prowess is well known, but Morgane more than holds her own in their household. Some of her most well known writing credits include Carrie Underwood’s “Don’t Forget to Remember Me,” LeAnn Rimes’ “You Ain’t Right,” and Trisha Yearwood’s “We Tried.”

For some people the idea of working with their spouse, let alone writing with them, would be a miserable experience. But for the Stapleton’s it just seems to work.

“From a work standpoint, we’re a married couple. And like anybody else, we might be getting on each other’s nerves or something. But if we’re away from each other for more than two days… we’re sort of like teenagers. We’re like, ‘I miss you,’ and, ‘I miss you too.“

It is safe to say Stapleton’s megastar status wouldn’t be possible without Morgane. Whether it be her background vocals on every studio album of his career, helping produce his latest album, or singing beautiful duets with him, she has been integral throughout his career. Chris summed it up perfectly in the interview:

“We’re trying to make the best out of whatever we’re doing. She’s the glue.”
