In the spirit of his 2026 Pawn Shop Guitar Tour, Tim McGraw is giving back to one lucky fan at every show in a very fitting way.
The 59-year-old country staple recently embarked on his string of summer tour dates earlier this month on July 9 in Bethel, NY. After taking a hiatus from the road while recovering from four back surgeries and a double-knee replacement, McGraw’s beloved fan-favorite show is officially back in business and he’s since conquered five of his thirty-three stops on tour.
Joined this time around by supporting acts 49 Winchester and Timothy Wayne, along with additional stadium performance guests, The Chicks and Lady A, the tour’s namesake not only represents his most recent May 2026 single but is also a nod to the pawned guitar that started it all for him. Back when he was just a college freshman, the “Red Ragtop” singer bought his first guitar at a pawn shop for just $25, after selling his high school class ring to make the money.
In a recent social media post, McGraw introduced the tour’s brand new nightly tradition, hoping to inspire a full-circle moment calling back to the beginning of his very own career. During the video, McGraw announces to the crowd, “In every city that we play in, we decided to go to a pawn shop and get a guitar, and we’re gonna start some kid out, tonight on their journey with their pawn shop guitar.”
He then hands it off to a young fan in the front row of his kickoff show, announcing, “This little young lady right here is going to be the first one” before finishing off the electric blue guitar with a fresh, sharpied signature. The adorable little girl even gets to join McGraw on stage for a photo, holding up her brand new (slightly used) prized possession, which she’ll undoubtedly need a few years to grow the proper arm span to be able to properly play.
In another clip posted on TikTok from McGraw’s guitar giveaway at his Toronto July 16 show, he hilariously nodded to his “Highway Don’t Care” mega-star duet partner beforehand, “Well maybe we’ll start the career of the next Taylor Swift with this pawn shop guitar.” Looking out into the crowd for all the little kids, ultimately he decides to hand off the guitar to an older gentleman in the front row who was still equally enthused but may not be the next Taylor Swift— he could certainly pull off being the next Aaron Lewis though.
The rest of McGraw’s original video shows the behind-the-scenes magic that goes into making this special on-stage moment happen with the help of his guitar tech, John Prestia (and of course, the pawn shop’s owner: Jim). That night, the electric black Gibson they picked out ends up in the hands of a young lady grinning ear to ear at the side of the stage.
Returning to the road this Thursday, July 23, in Camden, NJ, McGraw will surely continue the tradition and who knows, hopefully in a few years we’ll be able to read about a young star that got their start thanks to one of Tim’s hand-me-down instruments.
