We need a Zach Top cover album, and we need it ASAP.
At this point, it should come as no surprise that Zach Top is quickly establishing himself as one of country music’s biggest rising stars. And while artists like Morgan Wallen and Ella Langley continue to dominate the streaming charts, Top has carved out his own lane by bringing back the traditional ’80s and ’90s country sound that so many fans have been missing.
Of course, Top’s original music speaks for itself, especially the tracks from his sophomore studio album, Ain’t In It For My Health. However, there’s just something about hearing him put his own spin on country classics that never gets old.
Whether it’s his acoustic renditions of George Strait’s “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” and “Nobody In His Right Mind Would’ve Left Her,” or his impressive live performance of Chris Stapleton’s “Nobody To Blame,” the guy has a knack for making just about anything sound incredible with those unmistakable smooth, twangy vocals.
And after doing a little digging through Top’s YouTube channel recently, I stumbled across another gem that deserves some attention…
This time, it’s a cover of George Strait’s 1991 No. 1 hit, “You Know Me Better Than That.” Written by Anna Lisa Graham and Tony Haselden, it was released in June 1991 as the second single from Strait’s eleventh studio album, Chill Of An Early Fall.
Although it doesn’t always get the same recognition as some of The King’s more iconic hits, “You Know Me Better Than That” is easily one of his most underrated uptempo tracks, at least in my opinion. The song has also racked up nearly 12 million streams on Spotify… and naturally, Top sounds right at home singing it.
While it might not be the flashiest cover he’s ever shared, it’s another reminder of just how effortlessly he can bring these old-school country songs to life.
